Resin Bound Paving 101: Materials, Tools, and Mix Process

hardscape training Oct 01, 2026

ResinScape is SEK Surebond's resin bound surfacing system, built on a technology that has been installed in the UK for more than 30 years and is now being brought to the United States. Greg walks through what the product actually is: a mix of natural clean aggregates and a resin binder that cures into a high strength, highly permeable surface. It can go over existing concrete or asphalt on something like a front porch, or over EZ Set trass in a new build so the system stays permeable from top to bottom.

The color range is where the design potential opens up. SEK stocks seven design colors, and blending them yields over 60 combinations you can spec to whatever a customer wants. ResinScape works for details and inlays, for a straight solid sidewalk, and in vehicular applications. On this job it is being run in two colors, cream and onyx, with flexible beading setting the curve around the porcelain and acting as the separator between the two.

The tool list is short. The Baron EZ Mixer in the F120 size is the one piece that matters, because resin bound needs a forced action mixer that tumbles the material into a consistent blend, and consistency is the whole game with this product. It runs on 110 power, so it plugs into any household outlet on any job. Beyond that, a paddle mixer on a drill covers it. The mixing sequence is walked through step by step: part A and part B pre-mixed in the emptied component bucket for one minute, four bags of aggregate dumped into the running mixer at once with the pre-mixed resin poured in immediately, two minutes of mixing, then binding sand added for one more minute for roughly 20 percent more strength than resin alone. From there it goes into a plastic lined wheelbarrow and out to the job.
