Paver Joint Sand Stabilizer 101: Spray, Squeegee, Back-Roll

hardscape training hardscaping tips Mar 22, 2026

Hardscape Mentor’s joint stabilizer video shows the exact workflow that keeps polymeric sand from raveling out after the first hard rain. Once the joints are compacted and blown clean, flood them with a water-based stabilizer like SEK Surebond 1300, squeegee the excess, and back-roll. That simple routine locks the sand, adds stain resistance, and protects the stone face.

Begin with pristine joints. Compact, broom, and blow the polymeric sand so no dust remains. Use a low-pressure sprayer with a fan tip to saturate the joints until they stop absorbing. Immediately pull the excess liquid into nearby joints with a squeegee so it doesn’t puddle. Finish with a microfiber mop or roller—this evens out the finish and prevents haze.

Work in 100–150-square-foot sections on hot days, stay between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and stick with breathable products so moisture can escape. Protect siding, aluminum railings, and landscape beds before you spray. Most stabilizers need 24 rain-free hours, so plan access routes with homeowners ahead of time.

If you’re a homeowner or DIYer, ask whether a crew stabilizes joints as part of their process, which product they use, and how long you should stay off the patio. The right answers tell you everything about their attention to detail. If you’re handling the job yourself, rent the same sprayers and microfiber tools pros use—garden sprayers and brooms won’t give the same finish.
