How to Install Flagstone Joint Filler the Right Way
Apr 06, 2026
We team up with Greg Crouse of SEK Surebond to run a full start-to-finish install of X Treme Wide Joint PolySweep on a flagstone patio, and the lesson is clear: flagstone joints need as much discipline as any permeable paver system. The day starts with clean stone, consistent gaps under four inches, and an open-graded base so water can drain. Before a single bag is opened, every stone is checked for flush heights because joint filler is the last chance to correct lippage.
The sand itself is the same quarry blend as standard PolySweep, but this wide-joint version doubles the polymer load so large joints lock up instead of popping loose. Dan dumps partial bags straight into the seams, and Greg trails with a stiff/soft combo broom—stiff bristles to move material, soft edges to clean the faces. Because the base is open-graded, they avoid over-compacting; a single pass with wide turns keeps the sand from disappearing into the sub-base while a “heavy broom” pass drops joint height just below the stone’s edge.
Watering makes or breaks the install. They use three passes with a fan or flat nozzle: a light mist to break surface tension, a slower soak to let water pool in the valleys, and a final pass that leaves water sitting on top before it disappears. Only when water lingers in the joint do they move on. Then they probe a joint with a knife to confirm the entire column stands up on its own—proof it’s saturated top to bottom.
Finish work is just as deliberate. Any crumbs left on the stone get swept off once the sand tacks up, blowers remove every drop of standing water (dust and minerals in the water can stain if you skip this), and the patio stays closed to furniture or traffic for at least 24 hours—longer if cool fall nights slow the cure. Greg also reminds crews to blow off boots and clean brooms before the resin hardens and to keep clients informed about weather-related cure times.
